The repair bench behind Hughes Living Co.

Nothing here
arrived perfect.

We buy returns, freight damage and short-parts furniture by the pallet, fix it on the bench, and open it at a dollar. What was wrong with your piece is printed on its tag, along with what we did about it and what we could not.

Open lots

Each lot opens at a dollar and closes on its own clock. Bid in the last two minutes and the clock pushes out two more.

What the tag tells you

A wired manila tag hangs on every piece in the shop and follows it to the listing. It is the same tag the bench tech filled out, transcribed word for word.

Lot number and pallet of origin

Every lot names the pallet it came off. Buy two lots from pallet 0442 and they were unwrapped on the same morning, which usually means one trip to pick both up.

The grade stamp

Stamped by the tech who signed off the repair, not by whoever wrote the listing. The rubric below is the whole rubric.

Middle
block

Found, fixed, still

Three lines. What was wrong when it hit the bench, what we did, and what we did not get all the way back. The third line is the one worth reading.

Tear-off
stub

The tear-off stub

The bid half. Current price, bid count and the clock. When a lot closes, the stub prints as the pickup slip you show at the dock.

Grade rubric
GradeWhat it meansProtection
A Functionally new. Opened box, floor sample or a return that was never assembled. Nothing was repaired. Available
B Repaired and sound. A trace of the fix may be findable if you look for it, and the tag says where. Available
C Repaired and sound, with a flaw you will see from across the room. Priced accordingly. Available
D Parts or project. Sold exactly as it sits, usually incomplete. We will tell you what is missing. Not offered

Bench protection

Optional coverage you can add on the bid sheet for grades A through C. It covers our repair, for ninety days. Here is the entire policy.

Covered for 90 days

  • The fault we repaired, if it comes back. Same seam, same mechanism, same joint.
  • Reclining, lifting and swivel mechanisms on any lot we serviced.
  • Electrical work we performed, including rewired lamps and power units.
  • Joinery we glued, doweled or re-drilled.
  • Your choice when we cannot fix it twice: full refund or an equal lot from an open pallet.

Not covered, ever

  • Anything printed on the “still” line of the tag. You bought that flaw on purpose.
  • Stains, tears and pet damage that happen after pickup.
  • Damage in your vehicle or in your doorway. Measure first.
  • Grade D lots. Those are sold as parts and cannot be covered.
  • Normal wear, and any repair made by someone other than our bench.

Protection runs 6% of the hammer price, $8 minimum, added at checkout. On a $260 sectional that is $15.60. Decline it and nothing else about the lot changes — there is no second price.

Bidding and pickup

Proxy bidding, published increments, and a clock that will not let anyone steal a lot in the last three seconds.

Bid your maximum, not your next step

Enter the most you would pay. We bid the smallest amount needed to keep you in front, and stop at your number. Nobody sees your maximum, including us, until it is beaten.

The two-minute rule

Any bid inside the final two minutes pushes the close out by two more. A lot ends when two full minutes pass with nobody willing to go higher. Sniping does not work here.

Buy it now until the first bid

Some lots carry a buy-it-now price. It stays live until somebody bids, then it comes off and the lot runs to the clock.

Pay at close, pick up within four days

Card on file is charged when the clock stops. Bring help and a truck — we load, you strap. Local delivery is quoted per lot before you bid; ask on the lot page.

Tax is on the lot. The invoice at settlement is the authority; this is the estimate, so nothing is a surprise at the counter.

Bids are commitments. A bid placed in the final two minutes extends the clock by two minutes for everyone.
